Celebrating the '60s at the LBJ Ranch, 2008: An LBJ 100 Event Friday, April 11 and Saturday, April 12. This special event will explore the importance of Lyndon B. Johnson's life and presidency. Speakers and authors will also discuss the relevancy of the Johnson years-the watershed decade of the 1960s-to our world today.

Friday, April 11: High school students will have a historic opportunity to learn about President Johnson on the forty-third anniversary of the signing of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965.

At the LBJ Ranch on April 11, 1965, Johnson signed this landmark bill at the one-room school where he first attended class in 1912 at the age of four.

On April 11, 2008, students will hear a variety of speakers that include historians Nick Kotz and Douglas Brinkley discuss LBJ and the 1960s, participate in a '60s fashion contest, and experience for themselves the physical setting along the Pedernales River in front of the Texas White House that President and Mrs. Johnson called "Our Hearts' Home."

Saturday, April 12, 2008: The public is invited to join the "Celebrating the '60s at the LBJ Ranch" event.

The activities will begin with a ceremony at the Junction School commemorating the signing of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

After the brief ceremony, visitors will go to the Texas White House to hear speakers on topics such as civil rights, the impact LBJ had on the 1960s and the world, and personal accounts by people with first-hand knowledge of President Johnson.

Speakers include: Nick Kotz author or Judgment Days: Lyndon Baines Johnson, Martin Luther King Jr. and the Laws That Changed America; Harry Middleton, former Director of the LBJ Library and author of LBJ: The White House Years; James Cross, LBJ's Air Force One Pilot; and Dick Holland, senior lecturer on the history and culture of the 1960s at the University of Texas.
