EVENT: 2nd ANNUAL LBJ 100 BICYCLE TOUR, March 28, 2009 [Editor's Note: This page refers to a prior year event. To see details for current year events, please go to the Activities page. Thanks] A Ride To Preserve History: With "wheels down" and a finish on the air strip of the historic LBJ Ranch, the tour traverses hilly, scenic, low-traffic ranch roads adjacent to the Ranch. Routes of 10, 32, 45 and 62-miles (100 km) are provided. As an added feature, Luci Baines Johnson leads an additional, special 10-mile historical tour (11:00 a.m. start time), with narration at each of the landmarks on the Ranch - the Texas White House, cattle barn, old school, old homestead, and the Johnson family cemetery. The Tour sponsors include the Friends of Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, the Hill Country Bicycle Touring Club, the National Park Service, and the Western National Parks Association. All net proceeds from the Tour go to the betterment of the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park.
A major leader of the Democratic Party and the 36th U.S. President (1963-1968), Lyndon Johnson loved nothing more than the tranquility and majestic setting of his Hill Country Ranch. Much of his Great Society legislation -- The "War on Poverty," Medicare (health care for the elderly), Medicaid (health care for the poor), aid to education, and critical Civil Rights laws -- was designed in the serenity of this environment. LBJ and Lady Bird deeded the ranch to the American people in 1972. With the passing of Lady Bird in 2007, the ranch is now part of the National Park Service. The LBJ 100 annual event is the premier ride to promote, protect and preserve the history of this national park site. Click Route Map for a detailed route map (pdf file). Flash Update! The LBJ 100 Bicycle Tour is now included as a Tour de Cure Training Ride. See: TdC Flyer and their: Web details. LBJ 100 REGISTRATION: On-line registration is now closed for this event.
