2nd ANNUAL LBJ 100 BICYCLE TOUR, MARCH 28, 2009:  A Ride To Preserve History

Come join us for a ride destined to become one of the premier cycle venues in the springtime Texas Hill Country. The 2nd Annual LBJ 100 Bicycle Tour "saddles up" again on March 28, 2009 (9:00 a.m. start time). With "wheels down" and a finish on the air strip of the historic LBJ Ranch, the tour traverses hilly, scenic, low-traffic ranch roads adjacent to the Ranch.

Routes of 32, 45 and 62-miles (100 km.) are provided.

As an added feature, Luci Johnson leads a special 10-mile historical tour (11:00 a.m. start time), with narration at each of the landmarks on the Ranch - the Texas White House, cattle barn, old school, old homestead, and the LBJ family cemetery.

The Tour sponsors include the Friends of Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, the Hill Country Bicycle Touring Club, the National Park Service, and the Western National Parks Association. All net proceeds from the Tour go to the betterment of the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park.

A major leader of the Democratic Party and the 36th U.S. President (1963-1968), Lyndon Johnson loved nothing more than the tranquility and majestic setting of his Hill Country Ranch. Much of his Great Society legislation -- The "War on Poverty," Medicare (health care for the elderly), Medicaid (health care for the poor), aid to education, and critical Civil Rights laws -- was designed in the serenity of this environment. LBJ and Lady Bird deeded the ranch to the American people in 1972. With the passing of Lady Bird in 2007, the ranch is now part of the National Park Service.

The LBJ 100 annual event is the premier ride to promote, protect and preserve the history of this national park site.

(A pdf file showing the various ride routes is being constructed and will be available soon. Please check back.)

REGISTRATION:  Adults and youth $30 by March 14th ($40 after) and includes supported rides with maps, rest stops, sag support, bandana and a ride T-shirt (to pre-registered riders).

Most of our rides are leader led where we stay together in groups.  Maps may be available for riders who want to ride at their own pace. Each year the club offers  several weekend tours and one week long tour. In addition to making friends and riding with others of similar ability, members get a 10% discount on parts and accessories at participating bicycle shops.  The annual dues are only $12.00. Item # 3

LBJ Marble Bust

Donated by Shirley James, Lady Bird Johnson’s Former Assistant

Opening Bid: $200

The marble LBJ bust is by Jimilu Mason, who also sculpted the life-size sculpture of President Johnson that stands at the LBJ State Park in Stonewall.

A similar bust is in the Senate Gallery of Vice Presidents in Washington, D. C., and one also is in the LBJ Library in Austin.

Ms. James: “After President Johnson's funeral, I was asked to help at the LBJ Library in various ways including correspondence and news clippings.

I went for two days and stayed for three months.  Mrs. Johnson—ever gracious and generous in showing her appreciation—gave me this bust along with several other items of treasured memorabilia.”

Item # 4

Table Made of Elm from LBJ’s Birthplace
Donated by Ric Smith
Opening bid: $200

A one-of-a-kind, small four-legged table or stool made from a branch of the large American elm that shaded LBJ's Birthplace for decades.

The table-top is a cross-section of one of the branches from the tree that stood near the site where, according to the president's mother, "Lyndon discovered America."

The tree rings on this branch mark about 90 years of Hill Country history. The age of the tree itself is unknown.

The tree was removed in 2000 due to the unsafe main trunk which had become hollow.

The table was designed and crafted by noted woodworker, Ric Smith, Hye, Texas. The table top is oval shaped with some bark remaining on the sides.

Inlaid in the edge of the table between the bark and the wood are some aventurine crystals, "comfort stones." The table is 23" long and 21" wide, and stands 17" high. The four legs are made from Bois D'Arc wood. Mr. Smith does custom woodwork from his home and created this unique piece especially for this event and the silent auction. Other work by this craftsman may be seen at Artisans at Rocky Hill, 234 West Main, Fredericksburg.
