Matthew D. Carroll (Matt) was appointed as the Superintendent of Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) National Historical Park and Waco Mammoth National Monument in May 2025. He oversees operations at both of these unique parks to ensure visitors can experience the legacy of LBJ in Texas Hill Country and the scientific importance of paleontological remains of a mammoth herd located in central Texas. To best serve the needs of each park, he works closely with key partners vested in their success.
In September 2021 Mr. Carroll became Superintendent of the Southeast Arizona Group, responsible for the day-to-day operations and management for Chiricahua National Monument, Coronado National Memorial and Fort Bowie National Historic Site. Each park is rich in natural, cultural and recreational opportunities offered to the public.
Mr. Carroll joined the National Park Service in June 2015, serving as the Superintendent of Greenbelt Park and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway just outside of Washington D.C. In this capacity he managed these two diverse National Park Service units which included areas for picnicking, hiking and camping along with 19 miles of scenic roadway serving over 120,000 commuters daily. During this period, he also served as Acting Superintendent at Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, PA.
Carroll’s appointment as Superintendent culminates a lifelong passion for national parks, history and the outdoors. As a longtime outdoor advocate, he served a number of federal and state land management agencies as a volunteer, trainer and Leave No Trace Master Educator. Prior to his arrival at the National Park Service, Carroll served as a Director in the Department of Energy’s Office of Science where he supported 10 National Labs across the United States. This followed a distinguished 25-year career in the United States Air Force focused on budget, policy, safety and operations. Carroll retired at the rank of Colonel in 2014.
In 1989, he graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in Business and holds an MBA from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Matt celebrated his 24th wedding anniversary with Kristien in 2024. Their son James graduated from DeMatha Catholic High School in May 2021 and Cochise College in 2025. Other members of the family include their beagle, LuLu and cat, Benji.
